Trainers stretch their skills

During the summer, athletic trainers are still at work. Some athletic trainers stick around Charleston to help the athletes who stay over the summer, and other trainers get internships with high-profiled National Football League teams.

According to Associate Athletic Director Mark Bonnstetter, about four to five students have gotten internships with NFL teams over the last several years.

A new 'Bos' in town

After swimming graduate assistant Matt Bos finished his master's degree at Eastern in 2002, he went overseas to coach in New Zealand. Since then, he has trained Olympic caliber athletes and was coach on the rise. However, when long-time Eastern swim coach Ray Padovan retired, Bos was drawn back to his former school.

Wallace finds new home at Eastern

Mary Wallace has been doing a balancing act between coaching women's track and field and working as senior women's administrator during the last three years.

By early July, the act concluded.

Wallace was hired as assistant athletic director, but had to give up her love of coaching in the process.

Rusche hired as graduate assistant

With the days of patrolling the Worthen Arena paint in her past, former women's basketball player Lisa Rusche wasn't willing to leave the Ball State athletics department just yet.

Rusche, who has helped design media guides and posters for the athletics department during the past year and a half, will work as a graduate assistant in the Cardinals' athletics communication office.

Former Herd softball catcher Rachel Folden joined the Chicago Bandits in May, the same team U.S. Olympians Jennie Finch and Vicky Galindo play for.

In a May 27 interview by Andrew Phillips on chicagobandits.com, Folden said, "I'm looking forward to being able to call myself a professional athlete.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals set to compete in preseason WNIT

More than 15 months after hosting its first-ever Women's National Invitation Tournament game, Ball State University's women's basketball coach Kelly Packard accepted an invitation to participate in the preseason WNIT.

The Cardinals, who released the first piece of their schedule Tuesday, will play Indiana University in the first round of the 2008 preseason WNIT.

Track athlete, coach join Olympic team

UK track and field coach Erin Tucker and hurdler Mikel Thomas have been invited to the Olympics in Beijing, joining several other Wildcats.

Tucker, the assistant spring coach will join the Venezuelan Track and Field National Team as a guest coach for Jose Acevedo, a UK track member already dubbed for the Olympics.

KY Basketball Museum moves to campus

Kentucky Basketball Museum's board of directors and UK have decided to relocate the museum to an on-campus location this fall in an attempt to resolve the museum's financial debt.

The museum, which was housed in the Lexington Convention Center next to Rupp Arena, has received a $100,000 annual contribution from UK for the last several years, according to Rob Mullens, Deputy Director of Athletics at UK.

Information directors add new sports

The combination of losing two graduate assistants and a thinned communications branch of the Ball State athletics department left a couple sports lacking a sports information director this summer.

Those positions were filled last week from within the department when associate athletics director Joe Hernandez assigned the men's basketball and baseball programs to sports information director Matt McCollester.
