The University of Cincinnati will soon have a program to study nuclear engineering, thanks in part to a grant from the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

The $118,342 grant will allow the university to develop a nuclear engineering track for students in the mechanical engineering technology major in the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The Ohio State University also received a grant from the NRC to use for a nuclear power plant simulator to assist its nuclear engineering courses.

Ohio Senator George Voinovich praised the grants to the respective universities.

“It is critical that we develop the skills needed to support a continued nuclear renaissance, and I am proud that the University of Cincinnati and Ohio State University will each contribute to meeting our country’s needs for clean domestic energy,” Voinovich said.

The grants to UC and OSU are among $4.7 million in funds given by the NRC to universities across the country since 2005 for nuclear engineering study programs.
